It would be useful to have a list of pattern solutions. Links to style hints on how others have coded a solution.

here is another example of horizontal and vertical menu. See the demo here: http://www.webkeet.com/CSS_HorizontalFlyOutMenu.aspx
Login (vespabob)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 21 Aug 2011, 8:22 pm CEST
very late comments ... As to the logout, have seen and begun to standardise on having a "you are loged in as then a logout link - usualy top right hand corner. Agree on banking sites I'd expect to be taken to a scecific screen confirming that I have indeed ended my secure session - the bank also used this space for promos, exit surveys etc.
Table Filter (Basel Shishani)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 15 Aug 2011, 7:46 am CEST
I commend you for putting this useful information on the web, but the language you use is sometimes not precise and requires some head scratching on part of the reader. For example: 'which subset of information'? What does that mean? When you filter by columns that's a subset of information and when you filter by rows that's again a subset of infromation. So which one are you talking about. Then you have a pic showing a table from Hotmail, which does not seem related to the concept you're discussing. The reader checks 'directloy above the table' and there's onthing that allows selecting a subset of information. Rather there are actions to be performed on selected rows - and the selection is done on the side per row not at the top - so how is this pic related to the concept you're presenting. 'The amount of information-items is high' - here the reader is starting to guess that are you seem to be talking about rows?! But can't you just say too many rows?!
Breadcrumbs (Niek)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 15 Aug 2011, 7:45 am CEST
Hello, you wrote: "Don't use the current page name in the breadcrumb as the only way to show section title, add a title anyway." Now I am wondering if the opposite is OK or not? See e.g. http://www.vdab.be/carriere/ where the breadcrumb misses the current page name but the page title is shown directly underneath the breadcrumb.
Directory Navigation (http://emergencyplumbingraleigh.com)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 15 Aug 2011, 7:45 am CEST
I'm a webmaster for a county government, and we currently use a pattern like this on both our internet and intranet. It does provide a quick place for navigation to topically oriented subjects and saves the user time and frustration in locating what they are after. This is a good technique, and I don't see it used a lot anymore. Still valid in my opinion.
Automotive Site (David)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 14 Jul 2011, 7:42 pm CEST
Hi, I'm a Web Designer and this site is very well built and very resourceful ...keep up the good work. However, there are quite a few errors in the found that I have found and I just started visiting this site

Doormat Navigation (designbastard)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 5 Jul 2011, 8:26 am CEST
"Has doormat navigation been outmoded by the sitemap footer? Or is there a difference in value or context of use?" good question, I would like the answer to that as well...
Map Navigator (Michael Gaigg)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 18 May 2011, 11:33 pm CEST
I agree with Damon. Map Navigators do not use pan arrows anymore. They became map navigation controls on the map, preferably in the top left corner of the map.
Details On Demand (suj.girish@gmail.com)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 27 Apr 2011, 8:13 am CEST
This pattern is used when there is a lot of information. Instead of presenting the whole information and confusing the user, you are actually giving the user an option of selecting what he wants and then presenting information. Information loads faster
Search Results (mahalie)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 27 Apr 2011, 8:11 am CEST
looking for examples of thumbnails with search results, hard to find! they do it on lifehacker.com and of course on flickr and ecommerce sites but i'm looking for more blog/editorial sites that doe this.
Grid-based Layout (Shamsa)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 28 Mar 2011, 7:30 pm CEST
Thanx alot for article, very educating!
Site Map (Marianna)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 14 Mar 2011, 8:22 pm CET
I don't understand why sitemaps should not exist in big web sites. I believe that in bigger websites is where the user can get easily lost and required the help of a sitemap. I would like more explanation why sitemaps are inappropriate in big websites unlness it is a catalob.
Alternating Row Colors (Luc Moers)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 14 Mar 2011, 8:22 pm CET
I think an alternate name that often is used to summarize this technique is "Zebra striping".
Search Box (matt kocaj)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 22 Feb 2011, 8:26 am CET
I would like to violently disagree with the "the search is interpreted as an OR function" statement. Google whether we like it or not sets the convention for search; and at Google, space-separated terms are interpreted by default as AND boolean logic (like i think many other sites are). To read that OR is the inferred default is a little surprising.
List Builder (Cindy Lu)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 22 Feb 2011, 8:25 am CET
You should include Add behavior also for designers to consider how a user can add a row - where the button be located and where the new row will be added, the top of the list of bottom?
Navigation Tree (Keith Gill)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 27 Jan 2011, 8:23 am CET
One of the most notable instances of the Tree Navigation pattern would have to be that of the Windows "Explorer" pane.
Advanced Search (Peter)
Welie.com Pattern Comments 27 Jan 2011, 8:23 am CET
Search within results is better implemented by leaving the search phrase in the box after the user has clicked search. If your search engine gives more results when the user adds terms, this is really a question of a bad search engine, not an erroneous interaction design.
